THE HALL
LIVE EVENTS AND FUNCTIONS

New Century Hall is one of Manchester’s hidden gems and is plays a big part in its musical heritage. In the 60s Jimi Hendrix and Jerry Lee Lewis rocked the stage as part of the army of US exports finding fame in the UK. Home grown talent such as The Hollies, The Kinks, Herman’s Hermits and Procol Harum all crafted their acts playing here before going on to worldwide fame.

In the 80s the hall was a venue for the legendary all-night Acid House parties of the MADchester era. The likes of 808 state and A Guy Called Gerald swapped guitars for electronic instruments and channeled the spirit of Chicago House music into Manchester’s emerging underground scene.

Today the hall has been fully restored with its vintage wood wall panelling, sprung dance floor and psychedelic illuminated ceiling fully intact. Now equipped with a fully stocked bar, state of the art sound and stage production equipment, the venue plays host to an eclectic range of events throughout the year. The venue is also available for private hire events with catering options available in-house from our independent food traders based in the kitchens.

THE NEW CENTURY
FLOORING FUND

If you’ve visited New Century, you may have noticed that it boasts a contemporary adjustable sprung wooden dance-floor. The ‘Valtor’ system was designed as an adjustable sprung load floor and was patented and installed by Francis Morton, Junior & Co. This floor system came to prominence from the 1920’s, presumably in response to society’s increased requirement for dance halls and was installed at over 400 venues.

The flooring in New Century Hall is Grade II listed. Grade II listing signifies that something is of special interest, and warrants every effort of preservation. Our team possess the heavy responsibility to maintain this piece of history, and keep it true to how it was over five decades ago. This privilege is accompanied with high costs of preservation.

To protect the original Sprung dance-floor flooring, we will be adding a 50p ‘Flooring Fund’ fee to our event tickets across the board. All of this 50p fee will go towards the upkeep and protection of the flooring, meaning you are dancing on the same flooring that those who witnessed Jimi Hendrix will have done! Now that, is worth it. We pride ourselves on being part of the incredible Manchester community, and your help with the flooring fund will allow us all to see our acts in an original 1960s dance-hall for years (and years) to come!
